So flipping a bit in the radio might do something if the firmware allowed access to the VFO, which would require flashing different firmware most likely. Not sure how that would affect anything GMRS since I presume the radio's channel frequencies are fixed and unchangeable.

I don't have an MXT400 to experiment but I wonder if this mod is changing something with the channelization or just changing the VFO step size from 12.5 KHz to 25 KHz. It doesn't say that MXT400 can do wideband just that it adheres to channel spacing. If you read the response from Midland they switch from talking about authorized bandwidth to channel spacing. Else, look upmarket or at Baofengs with type certification. So if power output or battery life don't matter much to you, consider the Midlands. We can't say that for the Cobra MicroTalk blisterpacks we started with 3 years ago, which had a 30% failure rate. We bought 5 and all are still working a year later. They are a bit pricey for what are essentially Walmart radios in my opinion. Controls are clear to use (until the buttons get rubbed clean). Range is fair, but within blisterpack limitations. The above faults are a shame, because otherwise the radios have a nice set of features. The printing is substandard on the buttons. She wears it on her belt, and doesn't climb under pickups or do welding like I do. She replied that she could not see the writing on the buttons. A few months after I gave one to my wife to wear on her belt, I asked her to try a different channel. If you use the dualscan option to monitor two freqs, battery life is cut even more.īutton letters rub off. We tried some rechargeable NiMh AAs in there and that nearly doubles the useful life. The batteries supplied by Midland don't last a full 8h work day. The post above says they now have only 2w max. You can actually watch the battery meter dive when you trx. But we noticed that its already-poor battery life is even worse if you run Med or High power.

It's nowhere on their website that I can find, and the manual in the box also says only Low/Med/High with no explanation. Midland could not try any harder to hide the power output. I spotted this closed thread and it is informative Power questions about Midland. Net/net, I'd rather go upmarket or Baofeng. We tried the Midland GXT1000 line of GMRS handhelds.

The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola). The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming.

Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software.
